Manchester City: How Pep Guardiola’s quadruple attempt compares to Man United and Chelsea

Manchester City remain on course for a historic quadruple after they beat Brighton 1-0 on Saturday to reach the FA Cup final.

Pep GuardiolaĂ¢€™s men, who have already won the Carabao Cup this season, will face Watford at Wembley on May 18.

They aren’t the only team to get this far, though, with Manchester United (2008/09) and Chelsea (2006/07) almost claiming the incredible piece of history.

But how did they do City compare with previous attempts?

We go back in time to look at all the occasions when sides have failed in their quest to bring home the magic four, in terms of silverware.

Pep Guardiola’s men have been majestic this season and picked up the Carabao Cup back in February.

They are going head-to-head with Liverpool for the Premier League crown, with the reigning champions currently just two points behind Jurgen Klopp’s men, while they also have a game in hand.

On May 18 they will take on Watford in the FA Cup final, and they’ll also be hoping to make an appearance in the Champions League final at the Wando Metropolitano on June 1.

They must get past Premier League rivals Tottenham in the quarter-finals of Europe’s elite competition if they are to keep alive those hopes, though.

Manchester City (2013/14)

City’s prospects of landing the quadruple this term have lasted a month longer than back in the 2013/14 campaign.

Wigan Athletic were the team who ended City’s hopes that season, defeating them 2-1 at the Etihad in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

A matter of days later and the club’s Champions League dreams were over too – as Barcelona progressed to the quarter-finals at their expense with a 4-1 aggregate win.

Under the guidance of Manuel Pellegrini, who now manages West Ham United, City did win the Premier League and the League Cup that season.

Manchester United (2008/09)

Like their arch rivals above, the Red Devils also managed to secure Premier League and League Cup glory in the 2008/2009 campaign.

It looked as though they were on the cusp of a stunning quadruple success that year, before those hopes were shattered on April 19 2009.

In the FA Cup semi-finals, Everton got the better of United via a penalty shoot-out at Wembley setting up a showdown with Chelsea in that year’s final.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s men were also runners-up in the Champions League that season, with a Barcelona masterclass blowing them away in Rome’s Stadio Olimpico.

Chelsea (2006/07)

Jose Mourinho’s side won the League Cup and FA Cup during this campaign, while finishing runners-up in the Premier League.

They have, though, lasted the longest out of any of the teams to date in a bid to land the quadruple, with their impressive run finally ending on May 1 2007.

The Blues crashed out of the Champions League at the semi-final stage against a familiar face, with Liverpool beating them 4-1 on penalties at Anfield (1-1 aggregate).

Nottingham Forest (1978/79)

Under the late, great Brian Clough it was a season to remember for Forest – who had qualified for the European Cup for the first time in their history having won the title the previous year.

They managed to win the European Cup and League Cup, although their chances of winning the quadruple ended in February of that season.

A 1-0 defeat at home to Arsenal in the FA Cup fifth round proved to be Forest’s downfall, while they finished runners up in the First Division, as it was known then.
