Championship round-up: Derby seize control of final play-off spot, Rotherham relegated after heartbreak at West Brom, plus more

Derby edged closer to the Championship play-offs with a vital 2-0 victory over fellow promotion hopefuls Bristol City.

The Rams stay sixth and go four points clear of the Robins thanks to goals from Tom Lawrence and Jayden Bogle.

Between the two goals, the Robins were reduced to ten men when Antoine Semenyo was given a straight red card for his challenge on Tom Huddlestone.

Middlesborough, however, kept up the pressure on Derby by coming from behind to beat Reading 2-1 at home.

Tony Pulis’ side remain level on points with the Rams, who have played a game less and boast a superior goal difference, after Lewis Wing and Britt Assombalonga cancelled out Danny Loader’s surprise opener.

At the bottom of the table, Rotherham became the final team to be relegated after losing 2-1 at West Brom.

The visitors couldn’t hold on after Clark Robertson gave them a shock lead – and two strikes in as many minutes sealed their fate.

Jay Rodriguez levelled from the spot, before Rekeem Harper sent the Millers down to League One just a year after they were promoted.

Sheffield Wednesday hit back from two goals down to draw 3-3 at Preston after playing the final 10 minutes with 10 men .

Jayden Stockley’s header and Tom Lees’ own goal put Preston 2-0 up at half-time before Barry Bannan reduced the deficit soon after the restart.

Alan Browne restored Preston’s two-goal advantage just after the hour-mark, but Fernando Forestieri and Atdhe Nuhiu both struck with headers to haul the Owls level.

Wednesday defender Dominic Iorfa was sent off for his tackle on Darnell Fisher in the 80th minute.

Nottingham Forest climbed one place to 10th after winning 1-0 at QPR thanks to Iran striker Karim Ansarifard’s solitary striker 10 minutes into the second period.

QPR striker Nahki Wells’ late penalty was saved by Forest goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon.

Swansea let slip a 2-0 lead as they were held 2-2 by Hull at the Liberty Stadium.

Oli McBurnie’s 22nd and 23rd goals of the season put Swansea in control before Hull hit back through Jarrod Bowen and Nouha Dicko, who levelled in the 84th minute.

Montenegro vs England: Callum Hudson-Odoi becomes the second-youngest Englishman to play a competitive game

Gareth Southgate’s promise to ingratiate more youngsters into the England squad is beginning to bear fruit.

After a fantastic World Cup in Russia, the Three Lions boss secured qualification for the Nations League Finals, despite being drawn against Spain and Croatia.

And, on Friday, England got off to a great start in their Euro 2020 qualification group with a 5-0 rout over the Czech Republic.

While facing a side like Montenegro away from home has tended to cause some England fans to turn away in their droves, Southgate’s policy of picking youth has brought exuberance and excitement back to the national side.

Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi started the game at the Podgorica City Stadium, despite never having started a Premier League game for the Blues.

But Hudson-Odoi became the second youngest male player to start a competitive match for England at the age of 18 years and 138 days.

Philippe Coutinho set for Barcelona exit? Spanish giants ‘would discuss €80m bids’ for ex-Liverpool star this summer

Former Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho could leave Barcelona in a cut-price deal this summer, just 18 months after joining the club for £142million.

According to reports, the LaLiga champions are ready to listen to offers for the Brazilian star who has struggled to make an impact since arriving at the Nou Camp.

It has not gone to plan for Coutinho since his move to Barcelona from Liverpool in January 2018

2

It has not gone to plan for Coutinho since his move to Barcelona from Liverpool in January 2018

It is sensationally claimed Barcelona would be willing to take a significant loss to get him off their books, and would discuss offers starting at just €80m (£68.8m).

Coutinho was a key man in a Liverpool shirt, and was one of the Premier League̢۪s top talents during his time in England.

He was expected to play a big part in the Barcelona team, but it hasn̢۪t quite worked out for the 26-year-old in Spain.

The playmaker has nine goals and five assists this season. He started 16 games and made ten substitute appearances in the league, but hasn’t completed a full 90 minutes since January.

The reports of a possible exit will surely have Liverpool fans hoping for a dream return to Anfield, but that is reportedly not on the cards.

Manchester United have also been linked with an interest in the Brazil international but, according to Goal, Coutinho is unlikely to consider a move back to the Premier League after his family̢۪s struggle to adapt to life in England.

Instead, Paris Saint-Germain is said to be a more likely destination.

The French champions are one of the only European clubs that could afford to pay Barca’s asking price, plus the player’s wages. Coutinho is reportedly the third-highest earner at the Nou Camp on £240,000-a-week.

The prospect of joining international team-mates Neymar, Thiago Silva and Marquinhos is also bound to appeal, however it is claimed no approach has yet been made by PSG.

Barcelona are ten points clear at the top of LaLiga and are still fighting for trophies in the Copa del Rey and Champions League, so there is still time for Coutinho to prove his doubters in Spain wrong.

But given his current standing in the Barcelona pecking order, it̢۪s likely he will be forced to consider his future when the transfer window opens if things don̢۪t improve.

‘Raheem Sterling is one of the top 10 most valuable players in European football’ – Tony Cascarino hails Manchester City and England star

‘Raheem Sterling is one of the top 10 most valuable players in European football’ – Tony Cascarino hails Manchester City and England star

Raheem Sterling is one of the ‘top ten most valuable players’ in European football right now, believes talkSPORT pundit Tony Cascarino.

The Manchester City star continued his fine goalscoring form with a hat-trick in England̢۪s 5-0 drubbing of the Czech Republic on Friday night.

Sterling faced harsh criticism for his lack of goals during the Three Lions̢۪ run to the World Cup semi-finals in Russia last summer, but he has answered those critics in some style this season.

Sterling has been on fire for Manchester City

2

Sterling has been on fire for Manchester City

The 24-year-old’s well-taken treble took his goal tally to 24 for club and county this term – overtaking his career-best tally of 23 from last year – and with plenty of games still to play.

Sterling has been one of Man City̢۪s most consistent performers throughout the current campaign, as Pep Guardiola̢۪s side look to upset Liverpool and claim their second straight Premier League.

And Cascarino believes the youngster has transformed into one of Europe’s finest players.

â€Å“At the moment he’s one of the ten most valuable players in Europe,” said the former Republic of Ireland striker on the Weekend Sports Breakfast.

â€Å“If you were Real Madrid, or any of the biggest clubs in Europe, and you saw the way he tore apart Spain, you’ll be thinking: ‘He’s 24, if we can get him we’ll take him’.

â€Å“There will be clubs all over Europe looking at him.

â€Å“What sort of fee would you be looking at? Well, Ousmane Dembele at Barcelona – he’s a fantastic talent, incredibly quick and dangerous and he went for a lot of money, around €140million.

â€Å“Raheem is not in the same league [as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi] but he’s certainly in the top ten most valuable players in European football, without a doubt.

â€Å“If he stays injury-free, Raheem has everything at his feet to be winning things on a regular basis for his club and maybe, just maybe, his country.”

Sterling is said to have attracted plenty of suitors thanks for his sensational form, with Real Madrid linked with an interest in the Englishman.

But the forward signed a new three-year contract extension at Manchester City only in November, committing him to the Premier League champions until 2023.

And Cascarino says the winger has no reason to leave the Blues while Pep Guardiola is still at the helm.

Sterling has improved immensely under the guidance of Pep Guardiola

2

Sterling has improved immensely under the guidance of Pep Guardiola

He added: â€Å“As long as Pep is there, why would you leave a top manager?

â€Å“He knows how much of an impact and influence Guardiola has had on his career to help him become a better player. Why would you want to leave Pep?

â€Å“Raheem deserves to have a top manager with him who is going to improve him and keep getting the very, very best out of him.”

Lionel Messi scored 51 goals in all competitions for Barcelona this season, but was powerless to stop Liverpool’s march to Champions League glory – something his son likes to remind him about

It was the second season in a row the LaLiga club have been knocked out of the Champions League despite having a three goal first leg lead.

And Messi has revealed in an interview that his son, Mateo, likes to remind him of that Liverpool defeat in addition to the Copa del Rey final defeat to Valencia.

“Thiago never misses a match,” Messi told TyC Sports. “Mateo loves football, he wears all the shirts.

“We were playing at home and he said to me, ‘I’m Liverpool, who beat you’; ‘Valencia won, eh – I’m Valencia’.

“The TV is there, and he cheers Madrid’s goals to annoy his brother. He’s the one who is a Madrid fan.”

The interview even caught the eye of former Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa who tweeted ‘let’s get it signed’ in response to the Messi interview video.

The Argentina international is currently preparing for the Copa America, having ended the domestic season with just one trophy – the Spanish Liga title.
