Liverpool news: Adrian Durham claims Reds are ‘bottlers’ if they miss out on Premier League title and Dean Saunders is not happy

Former Liverpool striker Dean Saunders was not happy with Adrian Durham’s claim that the Reds are ‘bottlers’ if they miss out on the Premier League title this season.

Manchester City climbed a point clear at the top of the table with a 2-0 victory over Man United this week.

It means the title is now out of Liverpool’s hands. They could even end the season with 97 points, the highest points tally in the club’s history, and still not be crowned champions.

And, given they once held a huge lead at the summit, talkSPORT host Durham said the Reds have ‘bottled’ their chance to finally end their long wait for a league crown.

Here’s what Adrian said about Liverpool on Thursday’s Drivetime:

“On December 29 Liverpool had a ten-point advantage over Man City, and City had a game in hand. When they met each other at the start of January, if Liverpool had won that game they would have been ten points clear of Man City. They lost that game and now Man City have the advantage.

“Whilst people do get a little bit uncomfortable with the word ‘bottle’, and I understand that, Liverpool have blown that lead.”

That is at odds with what John Barnes told talkSPORT on Thursday, when the Anfield legend insisted this season should NOT be deemed a failure for Jurgen Klopp’s side, even if they don’t win the title and are knocked out of the Champions League.

And fellow former Red Saunders also refuted the talkSPORT host’s claim.

“I agree with a lot of what Adrian says, but I don’t agree with him on this one,” said the Welshman on Friday’s Sports Breakfast.

“Liverpool have only lost one game all season – how can you bottle it if you’ve only lost one game?!”
