Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to land the Portugal international as part of his summer rebuilding plans.

However, reports in Fernandes’ homeland claim City have the edge to get his signature having opened secret negotiations with Sporting officials and the player.

It is understood Sporting’s director of football, ex-Newcastle midfielder Hugo Viana, has had a meeting with his City counterpart Txiki Begiristain.

Fernandes has an £87million buy-out clause in his Sporting contract, which runs until 2023.

He has scored 28 goals in 48 games this season and has excelled since arriving from Sampdoria in 2017.

He was voted Portuguese player of last season and has captained Sporting to two League Cup successes.

In a recent interview, Fernandes declared his readiness to play in the Premier League.

Fernandes said: “I had offers from clubs in England and Spain last year, but didn’t yet feel ready to go to a league where you play so many games.

“I felt I needed another year with Sporting to prepare myself for the demands of these competitions.”
