James Tavernier is the latest footballer to be the victim of racist abuse on social media.


The Rangers captain shared an offensive message he received on Instagram – adding a shoulder-shrugging emoji to the post.

The message read: â€Å“Hello black. U r f***ing dog s*** and should be playing for black.


â€Å“N**** n****.”


The post came six days after Tavernier took part in the Professional Footballers̢۪ Association campaign in protest at an escalation of incidents of racial abuse online.

A host of top players took part in a 24-hour social media boycott with the likes of Raheem Sterling, Mohamed Salah and Chris Smalling among the personnel involved.


Police Scotland were unable to confirm whether the message had been reported to them when approached by the Press Association.















The 27-year-old was targeted earlier this season when a supporter ran onto the pitch to confront him against Hibernian.


He then had objects thrown at him when Rangers played Motherwell.


Team-mate Wes Foderingham is another player who was the subject of racial abuse on social media last year.
