Liverpool

ALISSON BECKER: Reacted smartly when called upon, making important saves at key moments. 8 (out of 10)

TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD: Played a vital part in this memorable win. He did well for the second and the speed of thought for the fourth was outstanding. Back-to-back finals and he’s still just 20. 9

VIRGIL VAN DIJK: The PFA Player of the Year repelled ball after ball into the box and was confident enough to step or launch passes that would make other defenders dizzy. 8

JOEL MATIP: Strong in the air and on the ground, the centre-back has stepped up a level alongside Van Dijk. 8

ANDY ROBERTSON: Showed he was up for the fight when pushing Lionel Messi in the head inside the opening minutes. Not afraid to shoot and in the right place at the right time defensively, his evening came to a premature end after being hurt by Luis Suarez. 7

JAMES MILNER: An intelligent, experienced presence in midfield asked to fill in at left-back after Robertson’s half-time withdrawal. Did that job as well as you would expect. 8

FABINHO: Booked for a heavy challenge on Suarez just 11 minutes in, he walked the tightrope with aplomb during a superb performance. 8

JORDAN HENDERSON: Brilliant play brought the opener and a hurt knee looked to end his match but he battled on and led by example. 8

SADIO MANE: Smart to read play and win ball in build up to the first goal, his movement was brilliant and unsettling. 8

XHERDAN SHAQIRI: First start since January and proved a handful, buzzing around and sending in a fine cross for the third. 7

DIVOCK ORIGI: Without Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino through injury, he netted a brace on a night that will long in the memory. An unlikely star. 9

SUBSTITUTIONS:

GEORGINIO WIJNALDUM (for Robertson, 46): Another unlikely hero. His presence and confidence helped bring two goals in quick succession that gave Liverpool momentum. Changed the game. 9

JOE GOMEZ (for Origi, 85): Brought onto settle things as wave upon wave of Barcelona attacks rained down. 7

DANIEL STURRIDGE (for Shaqiri, 90): Helped kill time. 6

Barcelona

MARC-ANDRE TER STEGEN: A difficult night for the normally reliable German goalkeeper. 5

SERGI ROBERTO: The versatile Barca man made a few important interceptions before wilting. 5

GERARD PIQUE: The former Manchester United man looked to holding his nerve in the opening period but should have done better with the third and led better. 5

CLEMENT LENGLET: Looked a little fortunate not to get pulled up for edging Mane off the ball when trying to run through and could do little to stem the Red tide. 5

JORDI ALBA: Gifted possession to Liverpool for the opener and the marauding left-back tried his utmost to provide an attacking option. 6

ARTURO VIDAL: A defence-minded option used to help kibosh Liverpool’s midfield intent, he did well enough during his time on the field. 6

SERGIO BUSQUETS: Booked late in the first half for clattering challenge and was unable to provide his normal impact. 5

IVAN RAKITIC: Recycled the ball in midfield well enough early on but struggled as the going got tough. 5

LIONEL MESSI: Had an early tiff with Robertson and went close on a few occasions. This was not to be another masterclass, though. 6

PHILIPPE COUTINHO: Should have done better with 18th minute shot at Anfield, where the home faithful enjoyed waving him off their former star after 60 ineffective minutes. 5

LUIS SUAREZ: Received a hostile reception throughout at Anfield, where he made one shot and few new friends. 5

SUBSTITUTIONS: NELSON SEMEDO (for Coutinho, 60): Had an initial positive impact on a night to forget for Barcelona. 6

ARTHUR (for Vidal, 75): Brought on to add another dimension to Barca’s build-up but could not provide a game-changing moment. 5

MALCOM (for Rakitic, 80): Wasted a crossing chance and failed to make a telling impact after his late introduction. 5
