Porto goalkeeper Iker Casillas is retiring from football after suffering a heart attack, reports claim.
Casillas, the Real Madrid and Spain legend, has decided to call time on his career despite recently signing a new contract with the Portuguese club.
He has been offered a position in Porto’s backroom staff by Pinto da Costa, the club’s chairman, with the role understood to be some kind of ‘international ambassador’ to take advantage of his fame and media influence.
ABC claim Casillas will announce his retirement ‘shortly’.
The 37-year-old suffered an acute myocardial infarction earlier this month while at Porto’s training centre, with the glovesman rushed to hospital.
He quickly entered a stable condition, and admitted after leaving hospital he may return to football.

“I will have to wait a couple of weeks or a couple of months, the truth is I don’t care (how long),” Casillas told reporters outside the hospital.
“I don’t know what will happen in the future but the most important thing is to be here and to be able to speak with calm.”
Casillas is widely regarded as one of world football’s greatest ever goalkeepers, having enjoyed great success on both the domestic and international stage.
