Paul Gascoigne’s appearance in the upcoming Tottenham Legends game at their new stadium depends on his fitness, Gary Mabbutt has told talkSPORT 2.
A host of White Hart Lane heroes are set to grace the pitch in the latest test event for their soon-to-be-opened £1billion ground on Saturday.
But fans have been drooling at the prospect of seeing Gazza back in a Spurs shirt the most, with thousands of tickets being snapped up for the game against an Inter legends side.
And Mabbutt – the former Spurs captain and manager of the legends team on Saturday – is optimistic Gazza’s participation will be confirmed.
Speaking to talkSPORT 2 host, and Spurs stadium announcer, Paul Coyte on Wednesday, Mabbutt said: “Since I was given the role as manager, I contacted players three or four weeks ago initially to see if they were available.
“I contacted Gazza – we know what a great player and a huge fans’ favourite he is.
“With Paul, the idea is obviously very exciting but he’s having to evaluate his fitness.
“At the moment nothing has yet been confirmed, but we are talking on virtually a daily basis.
“So nothing is confirmed yet, but if we can get Paul there it would be fantastic.â€
Fans will be hopeful the England icon is fit enough to play, though, after Gazza posted this video on Twitter on Wednesday morning.
A number of other iconic former Tottenham players have been confirmed for the game.
Former striker Jurgen Klinsmann is among the famous faces to have signed up, with Rafaal van der Vaart, Darren Anderton and Steffen Freund also set to play and Robbie Keane expected to captain the side.
“We’ve got some huge crowd favourites in our side and of course the Inter Milan legends have a brilliant team, so we’re looking forward to a fantastic game,” Mabbutt added.
“We’re still waiting for some confirmation, but as yet we’re looking at about 22 players.
“Of course I would love to have been playing too, but unfortunately while the mind is very willing, the legs and the feet aren’t very willing at the moment!
“But I’m very proud to be the Spurs legends manager for the day and everyone is looking forward to it.
