Arsenal have had a disappointing season, but they have one last chance to make it a slightly better one.
It promises to be an exciting summer at the Emirates, but only if the Gunners win the Europa League, which in turn will guarantee them Champions League football.
Unai Emery’s side face Chelsea in Baku on 29 May and will be desperate to strengthen his side having finished fifth in the Premier League.
However, with another season in Europe’s secondary competition a possibility, expectations on the calibre of players being signed will have to be considerably reduced.
LATEST FOOTBALL NEWS
Arsenal are already losing Petr Cech, Danny Welbeck and Aaron Ramsey at the end of the season as their contracts expire, with the latter agreeing a lucrative deal with Juventus.
There have also been reports claiming Mesut Ozil, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Shkodran Mustafi will be sold this summer, with Emery hoping to bring in five new players as part of a major rebuild of the Gunners’ first-team squad.
Transfer budget
According to journalist David Ornstein, Arsenal will have a lowly £40million summer transfer budget if they are playing in the Europa League next season, whereas it will be ‘significantly’ higher should they qualify for the Champions League.
This budget can of course increase through player sales, though it is almost impossible to sign an above average player for under £50million – let alone any individual considered among the elite.
Wilfried Zaha
Arsenal are preparing a £40million bid to sign Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha, according to reports.
But the Eagles’ £80million asking price could end the Gunners’ pursuit.
The Gunners, though, could offer Callum Chambers, Carl Jenkinson or Reiss Nelson as part of any potential deal for the Ivory Coast international.
Alexandre Lacazette
Atletico Madrid have identified Lacazette as their prime target to replace Antoine Griezmann, according to reports.
Barcelona have been linked with the forward but the Madrid outfit are considering a bid to prise the forward away from London.
According to French outlet Le 10 Sport, Arsenal have reportedly had an approach from the LaLiga club over a deal for Lacazette.
Hakim Ziyech
As talkSPORT.com reported, Arsenal look set to pip Manchester United to the signing of Ziyech this summer and the winger will cost just £25million.
The Morocco international has previously insisted it is his ‘dream’ to play for the Gunners and quotes Mesut Ozil as his hero.
Ziyech enjoyed a fantastic season at Ajax where he helped Erik ten Hag’s side lift the Eredivisie trophy and the KNVB Cup, while he also won the club’s Player of the Year award thanks largely to his 21 goals and 24 assists in 49 games across all competitions.
William Saliba
Emery wants to bolster his defence with a move for Saint-Etienne’s 18-year-old defender, who stands at 6ft 4ins.
Goal, report Arsenal are impressed with the £25million-rated centre back, who signed a four-year contract with the Ligue 1 side back in April.
Walter Kannemann
Arsenal have made a £10.5million bid for Gremio centre-back Walter Kannemann.
CalcioMercato believe the Argentina international is ready to quit his current club with Inter Milan and Sampdoria also keen on his services.
