The most disappointing Premier League transfers in 2018/19, including Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United flops

When Sir Alex Ferguson signed Eric Cantona for Manchester United in 1992, few anticipated just how much of an impact the striker would go on to have.

Having failed to sign Alan Shearer and David Hirst, the Scot found his team slumped in eighth place in the Premier League and floundering behind their rivals.

Eric Cantona went on to become a legend at Manchester United

But the enigmatic Frenchman saved the Red Devils’ season and – at a cost of just £1million from rivals Leeds United – proved to be a truly remarkable signing.

However, this is a rarity in today’s market and United are a prime example of that.

While their financial clout is certainly not to be sniffed at, the club’s policy of splashing the cash has seen them slip behind rials Manchester City and Liverpool.

United are not the only side to have fallen victim to this. With the influx of television money, clubs can afford to spend more money on signings than in previous years – meaning their transfer mistakes are all the more scrutinised.

This season has been no different and talkSPORT.com has compiled a list of the ten most disappointing signings from the 2018/19 season.

Scroll down to see if any of your club’s signings feature!

Injuries have continued to plague Wilshere in the East End

After being informed by Unai Emery he was surplus to requirements at the Emirates, Wilshere decided to hop on the London Overground and join Manuel Pellegrini’s revolution at West Ham United.

However, after starting the first four games of the season and losing every single one, the England international underwent ankle surgery.

Speculation he would miss the rest of the season began to intensify, but the 27-year-old returned to action in April.

Appearances from the bench during the wins against Southampton and Watford suggest those who have written Wilshere off may be premature, but he has a lot to prove next season.

Gonzalo Higuain – Chelsea (Loan)

The Juventus striker has struggled against the best teams in the Premier League

When Maurizio Sarri took over in the summer of 2018, it became apparent he wanted to replicate his success from Napoli.

‘Sarriball’ initially thrilled Blues fans, but as Jorginho began to suffer, so did the team.

Recruiting the Argentina international may not have been a long-term option, but Sarri hoped he would at least provide some short term relief.

But with a transfer ban incoming and with just five goals from 15 Premier League appearances, it is safe to say the Italian’s gamble on Higuain has not paid off.

Kenedy – Newcastle United (Loan)

Kenedy had an afternoon to forget in Wales – a game which summed up his season

Kenedy had an afternoon to forget in Wales – a game which summed up his season

Kenedy’s loan move from Chelsea to the Toon in 2018 proved to be a masterstroke by Rafael Benitez as the Brazilian (alongside Martin Dubravka) helped secure Premier League football.

However, a return to St James did not prove to be as successful for the 23-year-old.

His season at St James Park can be best summed up by one unforgettable afternoon against Cardiff City in August.

Having not completed a single pass in the first half and after having lashed out at Victor Camarasa, Kenedy then inexcusably missed a 95th minute penalty and the chance to secure all three points – disappointing to say the least.

Jean Michael Seri – Fulham (£25million)

Once courted by Barcelona and Arsenal, Seri looked out of his depth at Fulham

Fulham beating top clubs to the signing of Seri was probably the highlight of their season.

The Ivory Coast international shot to international prominence with Nice in Ligue 1 and had the biggest sides in Europe fighting over him.

However, it was Slavisa Jokanovic who pounced first and brought the 27-year-old to the Premier League.

The central midfielder looked off the pace and never adapted to the demands of English football.

Alireza Jahanbakhsh – Brighton and Hove Albion (£17million)

The Iranian is Brighton’s record signing and must start delivering for whoever replaces Chris Hughton

The Iranian is Brighton’s record signing and must start delivering for whoever replaces Chris Hughton

With skills as complicated as his surname, Brighton thought the signing of the Iranian trickster would take them to the next level in the Premier League.

But with Pascal Gross and Glenn Murray failing to fire, it became clear goals were hard to come by for the Seagulls.

Jahanbakhsh failed to record a single assist, nor did he score in his debut season in England.

Whoever replaces Chris Hughton at the Amex must now choose whether to stick with the 25-year-old or try and recoup some of the record £17million for him.

Stephan Lichsteiner – Arsenal (Free)

Unai Emery’s face says it all really

If you had told an Arsenal fan before the start of the season they would be signing a serial Champions League, Serie A and Coppa Italia winner from Juventus, few would have believed you.

If you had then said the player in question has more than 100 caps for his country and was known as ‘Forrest Gump’ in Italy, chances are the Gunners fans would have entered meltdown.

Alas, 35-year-old right-back Stephan Lichsteiner was never going to set the world alight, but his performances this season have been woeful.

With time not exactly on his side and Hector Bellerin closing in on a return from injury, do not expect to see the ‘Swiss Express’ feature too prominently at the Emirates next season.

Fred – Manchester United (£52million)

The diminutive midfielder will be desperate to show his quality next season

The diminutive midfielder will be desperate to show his quality next season

The last time Manchester City signed a Brazilian defensive midfielder from Shakthar Donetsk it ended up being rather beneficial.

But with Fernandinho nearing the end of his career, Pep Gaurdiola identified compatriot Fred as the ideal replacement.

But, as with Alexis Sanchez six months prior, United gatecrashed the party and pounced with a colossal £52m bid and snared the 26-year-old.

Fred surely has more to offer Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the United boss begins his rebuilding job, but he must do so quickly or else find his name associated with the likes of Eric Djemba-Djemba and Massimo Taibi amongst those who frequent Old Trafford.

Mohamed Elyounoussi – Southampton (£16million)

As the season wore on, the Norway international’s confidence drained away

getty

As the season wore on, the Norway international’s confidence drained away

Southampton thought they had snared a potential world beater when they made a £16million move for Norway international Elyounoussi last summer.

Tricky, skilful and with an eye for goal, the Basel forward earned comparisons with Mohamed Salah who also earned a Premier League move after impressing in Switzerland.

But unlike the Liverpool forward, Elyounoussi has struggled to carry his good form over to the Premier League with him.

The 24-year-old has shown flashes of brilliance at St Mary’s, but desperately needs to work on his consistency if he is to make it in the top-flight.

Joe Hart – Burnley (£3.5million)

Hart will surely struggle to get regular game time at Turf Moor now

getty

11

Hart will surely struggle to get regular game time at Turf Moor now

When Pep Guardiola ruthlessly cut Hart from his Manchester City squad at the start of the 2016/17 season, fans and critics were stunned.

The England international had arguably been City’s most consistent player for several years and was England’s No.1

Fast forward three years and after loan spells at Torino and West Ham it is hard to argue with the Spaniard’s decision making.

Times have been equally tough at Turf Moor for the shot-stopper, who instantly usurped between the sticks by Tom Heaton upon his return to full fitness.

Max Meyer – Crystal Palace (Free)

Meyer hasn’t shown what all the hype is about at Palace yet

getty

11

Meyer hasn’t shown what all the hype is about at Palace yet

Should you search online for videos of Max Meyer you will be inundated with compilations of goals, skills and technical brilliance.

Despite being linked with some of the biggest clubs in Europe, Schalke never cashed in on their star midfielder and he was allowed to run his contract down.

Having shown the technical ability to play as a both a holding or an attacking midfielder, Crystal Palace fans will surely have been delighted to see Roy Hodgson gleefully posing next to the 22-year-old.

But doubts about Meyer’s physical attributes have continued to blight the youngster and he has struggled to feature consistently for the Eagles this season – despite all the hype.

Football: Man City ease past 10-man Wolves to cut gap at top

(REUTERS) - Gabriel Jesus scored twice as Manchester City beat 10-man Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-0 to cut Premier League leaders Liverpool's advantage to four points on Monday (Jan 14).
Pep Guardiola's free-scoring side needed only 10 minutes to go ahead as Jesus tapped in after a flowing move.
Nine minutes later Wolves were left with a seemingly hopeless task as central defender Willy Boly was shown a straight red card for a ferocious tackle.
Wolves actually threatened on occasions but when Raheem Sterling was tripped in the area and Jesus tucked away a 39th-minute penalty to double City's lead it became all about how many goals the hosts would score.
To their credit Wolves were diligent in defence after the break and restricted City's chances although they did concede again when substitute Kevin de Bruyne whipped in a cross that glanced in off Wolves' Conor Coady.
City have now racked up 19 goals in their last three games although the other two were Cup wins over second-tier Rotherham United and third-tier Burton Albion.
Liverpool are top with 57 points from 22 games with City on 53 in what now looks a two-horse race for the title.

Leroy Sane ‘lucky’ after ‘vicious foul’ on Manchester City star during Germany’s friendly with Serbia, claims Joachim Low

Germany boss Joachim Low believes Leroy Sane was lucky to emerge unscathed from Milan Pavkov’s horror-tackle during Germany’s 1-1 draw with Serbia.

Pavkov was shown a straight red card in stoppage time for a horrendous challenge on the Manchester City star.

The winger hobbled off the pitch

Sane hobbled off the pitch but suffered no lasting injuries, and his manager suggests the winger was fortunate not to suffer any broken bones.

“It was a vicious foul,” said Low.

“Sane was lucky and got away with not getting hurt but such fouls can break bones.”

Leon Goretzka came off the bench to equalise as Germany snatched a 1-1 draw in Wolfsburg.

Low’s new-look side, who begin their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign against Holland this weekend, needed time to warm up after falling behind to a 12th-minute Luka Jovic header.

It was not until the second half that Germany began to threaten regularly and Goretzka levelled on 69 minutes after combining with fellow substitute Marco Reus.

City boss Pep Guardiola will be mightily relieved that Sane suffered no long-term problem, with his side chasing an unprecedented quadruple.

The Citizens are locked in a tense title race with Liverpool, two points behind the Reds with a game in hand, and Sane is sure to play a key role in their final eight games.

Harry Kane injury latest: England captain’s ankle issues and how Tottenham Hotspur cope without him

Harry Kane’s season may well be over after picking up an ankle injury on Tuesday night against Manchester City.

The England captain attempted to make a robust challenge on Fabian Delph close to the sideline, but came off second best.

The Tottenham Hotspur striker went straight down the tunnel after this tackle

Kane left the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium wearing a protective boot and Mauricio Pochettino admitted the injury sustained to his left ankle could well be season-ending.

He told BT Sport: “We need to check tomorrow but it looks the same, a similar issue.

â€Å“Very sad, very disappointed, and it’s going to be tough for the rest of the season.

â€Å“We hope it’s not a big issue but there’s not much time to recover. He’s twisted his ankle and we will see how he reacts in the next few hours.”

With the 25-year-old off the pitch, Heung-min Son struck with just 12 minutes of normal time remaining to give Spurs a vital 1-0 lead over City heading into the return leg next week at the Etihad.

But the succession of ankle injuries Kane has picked up throughout his career will be a real concern to Pochettino, who has been forced to play without his talisman already this season.

Below, talkSPORT.com examines Kane’s injury history to determine how Spurs cope without their star striker and if there is a serious issue to address.

Kane first sustained an ankle injury in a 1-0 Premier League win over Sunderland in September 2016 – where he scored the winner. He fell awkwardly in the final few minutes and scans revealed ligament damage.

He ended up missing 10 Tottenham games in total, also missing an international break and returned for a 1-1 draw at Arsenal on November 6.

Football: Man City still teenagers in adult world of Champions League, says Guardiola

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has again cast doubt on the Premier League champions' readiness to win the Champions League for the first time despite being favourites for the competition.
City host Bundesliga strugglers Schalke on Tuesday with a 3-2 first leg lead in their last 16 tie hoping to avoid the pitfalls that did for Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid in Champions League shocks last week.
Guardiola admitted even he was taken aback by Manchester United's stunning 3-1 win in Paris and holders Madrid's capitulation to a talented young Ajax team, but refuted suggestions their elimination had cleared the way for City to finally conquer Europe.
"We are teenagers in this competition that's my feeling. It's not excuses, of course we want to win it," said the Catalan coach on Monday.
"You have to dream and point as high as possible but in the same time you have to accept there are other teams thinking the same with a lot of quality and lot of talent."
Guardiola was annoyed by City's mistakes in conceding two penalties and having Nicolas Otamendi sent off 22 minutes from time in Gelsenkirchen three weeks ago despite turning around a 2-1 deficit with 10 men through late goals from Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling.
And he used that experience to warn his players against any complacency.
"In domestic competition there is another game, in this competition there is not another game. It is something unique, the focus is incredible and when you make something wrong they (the opponent) punish it," he added.
"Schalke had two shots on target and scored two goals. We played 23 minutes 10 v 11 when we could avoid that second yellow card from Nico.
"We are lucky today we are here 3-2 up when we could be 3-1 or 4-1 down. That's the reality in this competition. (There is) work to do, be calm and focused." .

Gundogan future unclear

Along with the suspended Otamendi, Fernandinho will again miss out through injury, but the Brazilian's absence has not been felt as badly as first feared due to Ilkay Gundogan's form.
The German has deputised ably in the holding midfield role, but has so far refused to commit his future to City beyond his current contract, which expires in 2020.
"There is no decision yet otherwise I would have signed or rejected a contract. I would say we are still in talks," said Gundogan.
"I'm 28 years old now so obviously my next contract will decide where I am for maybe the end of my career.
"Everyone feels different, (whether) to go for a new challenge or change something. I am always open-minded for challenges, it is not (an) obvious (decision).
"Everyone has to make their own decision and at the moment I try to play as good as possible." Guardiola, though, urged Gundogan to make his intentions clear.
"I would prefer him to stay but at the same time I want to feel he wants to stay too," said Guardiola.
"If he doesn't want to stay, he has to leave."

Norwich, Leeds, Sheffield United and West Brom are competing for a top-two spot, while at least seven clubs are fighting for a play-off place.

talkSPORT.com looks at the players clubs in England’s second tier could lose if they fail to win promotion to the Premier League this season.

Pukki has taken the Championship by storm since joining Norwich on a free transfer from Brondby last summer. The 28-year-old has scored 24 goals in 32 league games to help the Canaries to the summit of the table. He has been one of the Championship bargains of the century.

Sheffield United, 2nd, 74 points

Dean Henderson

The Manchester United loanee has been crucial to Sheffield United̢۪s promotion push. The goalkeeper has played every single minute of their campaign and is part of the second-best defence in the division, conceding just 34 goals. Henderson played in League One last season, moved up to the Championship this term and could be looking at a step-up to the Premier League this summer.

Leeds, 3rd, 73 points

Roofe netted 14 goals before damaging knee ligaments in February and it is hoped he will play some part in Leeds̢۪ run-in. But with his contract expiring next year, Premier League clubs could be on red alert if Leeds fail to go up this season.

West Brom, 4th, 67 points

Jay Rodriguez

Rodriguez has been integral to West Brom̢۪s top-two push. Despite competing with prolific striker Dwight Gayle, Rodriguez has been the club̢۪s first-choice frontman. With 18 goals to his name, the 29-year-old, who was linked with a return to Burnley last summer, will not be short of suitors at the end of the season.

Middlesbrough, 5th, 58 points

Dael Fry has come through the ranks at Middlesbrough

Fry is part of the meanest defence in the Championship with Boro̢۪s back-five leaking 31 goals this season. The England Under-21 international̢۪s reputation continues to grow and the club could find it hard to keep him if they don̢۪t end their two-year exile from the Premier League.

Aston Villa, 6th, 57 points

Tammy Abraham

Tammy Abraham, on loan from Chelsea, is lethal in the Championship

It̢۪s obvious that Aston Villa̢۪s only chance of keeping Abraham depends on what division they̢۪re playing in next season. The Chelsea loanee is the Championship̢۪s third-joint top scorer with 21 goals. But he has just one goal in seven games and Villa will need to get him firing again. After failing to make his mark in the Premier League with Swansea, Abraham is likely to want another chance in the 2019/20 campaign.

Robinson missed three months of action with a hamstring injury earlier this season, but has still netted nine times to aid Preston’s unlikely promotion push. Bournemouth, who have history of delving into the Championship market, are believed to be tracking £7million-rated Robinson. The Republic of Ireland international will want to add to his four Premier League appearances he made with Aston Villa at the start of his career in 2014.

Derby County, 8th, 56 points

Wilson is currently enjoying the best season of his short career

Wilson has already been linked with a move to Leeds in the summer transfer window. The Wales winger̢۪s 12 goals have helped keep Derby in and around the top six throughout the season. However, their promotion push has stalled after one win in seven games. Liverpool loanee Wilson will need to go to an extra level to ensure the Rams secure a play-off place.

Bristol City, 9th, 55 points

In January, Bristol City activated an option to extend O̢۪Dowda̢۪s deal until the end of next season. Reports claim the Republic of Ireland ace is stalling on a new long-term deal, though. This could play into the hands of Leeds, who have been linked with the winger, and other mid-table top-flight clubs. O̢۪Dowda has impressed for the Robins in the second tier since joining from Oxford United in 2016.

Reach has been known for scoring outrageous long-range goals over the past two seasons. He is an ever-present for Wednesday, who hope to sneak into the top six under Steve Bruce̢۪s guidance. His wand of a left foot, eight goals and seven assists have made him one of the Championship̢۪s standout performers.
