Hamilton foiled again in opener

MELBOURNE ̢ۢ Lewis Hamilton experienced frustration for a third successive year at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix after a poor start and an early pit stop condemned the five-time world champion to another runner-up finish yesterday.
The Briton claimed a record-extending eighth pole position at Albert Park on Saturday, but ended a distant second behind his resurgent Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas, who got the jump on him at the start and burned away.
He was called in to pit early to follow Sebastian Vettel's lead after the Ferrari driver changed to medium compound tyres.
However, Hamilton was overheard on the team radio complaining his tyres would not last, before battling handling issues late on.
On the other hand, Bottas stayed out on soft tyres, a decision that contributed to his dominant 20-second victory, which the Finn declared was definitely his "best race ever".
"In the beginning, it was all about managing the race and building the gap," the Finn said. "I knew I could do it, I've done it before, it was about being at my best level."
Mercedes later issued an official statement saying they had discovered damage to the floor of Hamilton's car and there was a "chunk missing".

Given the circumstances, the 34-year-old felt he "did a relatively decent job", saying: "Obviously, the strategy was not ideal in the scenario that I had. Just obviously the start, I lost out quite a lot.
"It was a good weekend for the team. Valtteri drove an incredible race today so he deserved it. I've just got work on my starts more."
Sky Sports' Formula One commentator Paul di Resta questioned the decision to have him pit early, claiming he could not recall the last time "Hamilton was beaten fair and square like this".
But Mercedes boss Toto Wolff defended the call as the team "needed to cover that undercut (by Vettel)".
He said: "I don't think it was a mistake because we could have ended up behind by not doing that. I don't know why they pitted so early. That put us under pressure."
The Silver Arrows were, however, still delighted their raw pace was more than enough to put Ferrari and their rivals out of the equation.
Expressing his surprise that the Italian team "didn't have any pace at all", Wolff added: "Maybe the truth is somewhere in the middle."
While Mercedes welcomed the one-two finish despite Hamilton's teething problems, Ferrari left Melbourne with some serious questions to answer.
It was a sobering day for the Scuderia as Vettel and new teammate Charles Leclerc were reduced to fighting each other for a minor position, with early warning signs that all was not well coming to a head.
Although the German took umbrage at the decision to make him pit early as he lost pace late on, he admitted the strategy could not explain why the car, which had been the quickest in winter testing in Barcelona, was sluggish at corners and had handled so poorly.
Vettel said: "By the looks of it, of course we did (the change too soon) because I was struggling, so we need to have a good look.
"But even ignoring the lap that we pitted, it looked like other people had way less problems so I'm not quite sure what the issue was."

PFA Team of the Year: Gianfranco Zola, Xabi Alonso and the best Premier League players to never feature in XI

PFA Team of the Year: Gianfranco Zola, Xabi Alonso and the best Premier League players to never feature in XI

The Professional Footballers̢۪ Association̢۪s Team of the Year was announced on Thursday and, as expected, was dominated by both Manchester City and Liverpool players, while the selection of others left fans scratching their head.

An annual season award since 1974, the selection is voted for by professional footballers and while there are the expected inclusions and shock ones, too, there are also a number of surprise omissions.

Virgil van Dijk was named in the PFA Team of the Year

Virgil van Dijk was named in the PFA Team of the Year

Roy Keane, Patrick Vieira, Cristiano Ronaldo and Steven Gerrard are among the notable big name inclusions, yet stars such as Gianfranco Zola and Freddie Ljungberg have failed to appear.

Here, talkSPORT looks at a select bunch of players who have been ignored.

Pepe Reina (Liverpool)

The Spaniard left Anfield in 2014 and it is only this season they have finally found a worthy replacement in Alisson Becker.

A brilliant goalkeeper who was comfortable on the ball, something deemed essential in the modern game, Reina made 285 Premier League appearances for the club and was a three-time Golden Glove winner.

Only Petr Cech, Joe Hart and Tim Howard have kept more Premier League clean sheets.

Reina spent eight seasons with Liverpool

Ricardo Carvalho (Chelsea)

Despite being part of three Premier League title-winning sides with Chelsea, the Portuguese centre-back somehow failed to make the PFA team selection.

Was the perfect foil for John Terry and the pair were formidable, especially during the 2004/05 season when they only conceded 15 goals.

Carvalho formed a great partnership with John Terry

Martin Keown (Arsenal)

Was part of one of the best defences in the 90’s alongside Tony Adams, Steve Bould Nigel Winterburn and Lee Dixon.  The no-nonsense centre-back was integral to Arsenal’s double winning teams in 1998 and 2002 and remained with the club until 2004.

Keown was a solid defender in his prime

13

Marcel Desailly (Chelsea)

While Carvalho was Terry’s defensive sidekick, Desailly played a crucial role in helping to teach the latter the art of playing at the back and what it means to be at Chelsea, a man the former England captain described as his ‘mentor.’

Known as ‘The Rock’ Desailly was a two-time Champions League winner and World Cup champion when he moved to West London in 1998 and was equally comfortable as a defender or playing in midfield.

Xabi Alonso (Liverpool)

Arriving with manager Rafa Benitez and Luis Garcia in 2004, the midfielder added class and guile to the Reds midfield, operating as a deep-lying play-maker able to pass any distance across the pitch and was excellent alongside Gerrard as Liverpool captured the Champions League that same season.

Was key in their title charge of 2008/09, but reluctantly left the club at the end of that campaign for Real Madrid.

Alonso was pure class at Liverpool

13

Gareth Barry (Manchester City)

Barry has made a record 653 appearances in the Premier League, for Aston Villa, Man City, Everton and West Brom.

Mr consistency for over a decade with Villa, he got a move to the Etihad and won the Premier League in 2011/12 and was Everton’s Player of the Season in 2015/16, but remained over looked for PFA acknowledgement.

Barry won the league with Man City in 2012

Gianfranco Zola (Chelsea)

Signed by Ruud Gullit in 1996, the Italian already had a lengthy career, notably in Serie A, but despite being 30 at the time of coming to Stamford Bridge, would go on to enjoy several rewarding seasons and become a club legend.

Only 5ft 6, Zola refused to be intimidated in the physically demanding Premier League, skilfully navigating his way past defenders with ease and was key in the club’s resurgence to challenge and win trophies in the late 90’s.

Zola was a Premier League and Chelsea legend

Freddie Ljungberg (Arsenal)

Instantly recognisable with his red mohican and underwear modelling, the flamboyant Swede was a trailblazer not just for his fashion, but his ability to score from midfield and turn up in the big games.

His best season was arguably the 2001/02 campaign in which he won his first Premier League with Arsenal, netting against the likes of Man United and Liverpool.

As a result, he was named Premier League Player of the Season, but failed to make the PFA Team of the Year.

Ljungberg was at his peak in 2001/02

13

Claude Makelele (Chelsea)

The Frenchman was unheralded at Real Madrid, but loved by Chelsea. Makelele was the pivot-point under Jose Mourinho for which the midfield was built upon allowing Frank Lampard and Michael Essien to flourish.

His ability to read the game, tackle and pass quickly and accurately was vital, as he captured two league titles with the club.

Such was his greatness, the defensive midfield role has been named after him.

Makelele was vital to Chelsea’s success

13

Robbie Fowler (Liverpool)

He may now be the manager of Australian side Birsbane Roar, but Fowler was once the ultimate striker, renowned for his instinctive ability to finish and score all types of goals. That ruthlessness earned him the nickname ‘God’ from Liverpool fans.

Voted PFA Young Player of the Year in 1995 and 1996, Fowler was unable to ever make the team as voted for by his fellow players.

Fowler was the ultimate finisher

13

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink (Chelsea)

Chelsea have had a mixed bag when it comes to strikers over the years, but they got it right with Hasselbaink. There was nothing fancy about the Dutchman, who possessed a lethal shot and knew exactly where the net was.

Scored 23 times in 2000/01 to finish as the league’s top scorer, but somehow missed out on selection to Teddy Sheringham.

Ultimate Charity Auction: Watch Anthony Joshua fight in New York, go behind the scenes at Tottenham̢۪s new stadium and more amazing experiences

A chance to witness Anthony Joshua’s first fight on American soil at New York’s Madison Square Garden is topping the bill at a global online auction that has raised more than £1million since its inception.

The Ultimate Charity Auction, which has just launched and runs until Thursday, April 11, has once again brought together some of the biggest names in sport to offer a glittering array of over 100 money-can̢۪t-buy experiences.

One lucky bidder and a guest could be taking their seat to witness Joshua take on Jarrell Miller in NYC in a star-studded auction prize, which also includes flights, accommodation and boxing gloves signed and personalised by the current IBF, WBA and WBO heavyweight champion of the world.

FC Barcelona, long-term supporters of the Ultimate Charity Auction, have once again come up trumps with an incredible opportunity for two people to watch some of the world’s best players train – and then take in a home match at the Camp Nou.

Closer to home, there is a tantalising chance to go behind the scenes at the new state-of-the-art, 62,000-capacity Tottenham Hotspur stadium, escorted by club legend Ledley King, or enjoy being the star of your very own Arsenal matchday programme along with tickets in the Director̢۪s Box.

Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United, Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard are among the star clubs and players who have also donated star prizes.

The auction also includes the chance to take your place in the studio and watch either Gillette Soccer Saturday, Chris Evans or the Alan Brazil Breakfast Show on talkSPORT unfold, or join two friends on a round of golf at Hanbury Manor with former Tottenham, Liverpool and England goalkeeper Ray Clemence.

Fresh from his pursuit of a play-off spot, and potential Premier League football next season, Bristol City boss Lee Johnson has once again supported the auction by offering a chance to take part in a training session with the Robins and then enjoy lunch with the boss.

There is also an opportunity to benefit from an exclusive coaching session with a LMA Ambassador, or be part of a team in the annual LMA seven-a-side tournament at St George̢۪s Park.

Away from the beautiful game, the Ultimate Charity Auction also boasts a cricketing masterclass courtesy of Andrew Strauss, VIP experiences at either Royal Ascot and Henley Royal Regatta or a chance to star in the next instalment of Football Manager.

There is also the Ultimate sports fan ticket bundle up for grabs which includes two tickets to the AIG Women̢۪s British Open, England̢۪s rugby team taking on Wales at Twickenham in September, the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth and any PDC Premier League Darts Night of your choice during the 2020 season.

The auction also includes a host of other unique prizes from across the football world including mascot packages, executive boxes and a chance to see your favourite players get put through their paces in training sessions.

The Ultimate Charity Auction has raised more than £1million for national and local charities since its inception after attracting glittering prizes from household names in sport, celebrity and lifestyle.

This year, the beneficiaries will be the League Managers Association Charity – In The Game – and the GeeWizz charitable foundation, headed by veteran fundraiser and auction founder Gina Long MBE.

GeeWizz provides specialist equipment to children and young adults up to the age of 21, living in Suffolk and Norfolk, with life-threatening conditions, disability or cancer.

What the Ultimate Charity Auction aims to achieve

The Ultimate Charity Auction was launched in 2012 to provide an online fundraising platform to support national and local charities. The global auction has already raised £1,018,000 and was designed to capture the imagination of its bidders, offering money can’t buy prizes and experiences from the worlds of sport, lifestyle and celebrity.

This year it will be raising funds for GeeWizz Charity and the League Managers Association Charity–In the Game. In particular, the auction will be funding a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Disneyland for a little girl called Emily Mullen from Lowestoft, Suffolk. Emily sadly suffers from a range of complex health conditions meaning that she is now classed as terminally ill. She is also blind and has developed a love for Disney songs. Funds from the auction will cover the costs of this trip for Emily and her family, giving them the opportunity to make memories of a lifetime.

GeeWizz Charity support children and young adults who live with a life-threatening condition, a disability or cancer by purchasing specialist equipment such as electric wheelchairs and bespoke car sears, and physiotherapy that the NHS does not fund.

The LMA Charity–In the Game aims to increase its funding, remit and visibility of the LMA Charity and increase its contribution to the wider community. They help members and their families who have fallen on difficult times or find themselves in need of specialist care, advice or assistance.

Funds from this year̢۪s auction will help support projects around mental health in sport.

Gina said: â€Å“The Ultimate Charity Auction has always captured the imagination of both donors and those bidding on the fantastic money-can’t-buy prizes.

â€Å“But this year’s auction will be the biggest and best yet with a glittering array or prizes from the world of sport, celebrity and lifestyle.

â€Å“We are humbled to have such a star-studded list of auctions which we hope will raised an incredible sum of money and make a huge difference to the lives of the people we support.”
