Middlesbrough 0-1 Norwich: Onel Hernandez hits brilliant second-half winner to put Canaries five points clear at Championship summit

Norwich took another step towards the Premier League with a 1-0 win at Middlesbrough, whose own promotion chances have nosedived in recent weeks.

The victory came courtesy of Onel Hernandez’s second-half goal to leave the Canaries five points clear at the top of the Sky Bet Championship and seven points better off than third-placed Sheffield United after a fine run of form.

Daniel Farke’s side have now won seven games in a row, but the result marked Boro’s fourth successive defeat and sees them drop out of the play-off places, leapfrogged by Aston Villa, Derby and Bristol City.

Middlesbrough started this contest promisingly, putting Norwich on the backfoot.

George Friend, former Norwich man Jonny Howson and Ashley Fletcher all had shots at Tim Krul’s goal, though for all of Boro’s pressure the goalkeeper was not seriously tested.

It was Middlesbrough’s Darren Randolph who, while his team shaded an entertaining first half, made the more impressive saves.

A tremendous stop saw him push Teemu Pukki’s effort away, and Randolph was again to the rescue when Ryan Shotton horribly misjudged a punt down the middle, allowing the ball to bounce through to Pukki before Boro’s keeper dashed off his line to block at the Finn’s feet.

Randolph also showed good reactions when, with Pukki ready to pounce, he pushed away a bouncing Marco Stiepermann cross-shot.

Just like the first 45 minutes, Middlesbrough made a promising start to the second half.

Within 60 seconds of the restart they hit the post, Daniel Ayala with a header after a Shotton throw, and Howson saw a low shot after a free-kick gathered by Krul.

The only goal of the game came after 54 minutes, and, while harsh on Middlesbrough on the balance of play, they had only themselves to blame.

Fletcher did not deal with a ball swung in from a wide area and then Howson tried to dribble his way out of trouble. Norwich won the ball back and Hernandez nipped inside the penalty area to shoot low between the post and Randolph.

It was his seventh league goal of the season and he tried for an eighth later but Randolph was equal to it after Pukki had teed up his team-mate.

Boro boss Tony Pulis made three substitutions as he sought to find a way back into the contest and Boro did come close to levelling, their best chance being when substitute Stewart Downing had a powerful header hooked away from the line by the outstretched boot of Christoph Zimmermann.

And in added time Norwich defended in numbers to protect their lead, a blocked John Obi Mikel shot being Boro’s last hope of point.

Manchester City deny anti-Liverpool chant sung by players refers to the Hillsborough disaster or Sean Cox

Manchester City have strongly refuted claims that their players and staff mocked the Hillsborough disaster and Sean Cox as they celebrated beating Liverpool to the Premier League title.

A video emerged on social media on Tuesday which appeared to show City players and staff singing a distasteful version of Liverpool’s ‘Allez, Allez, Allez’ song on a plane as they flew back to Manchester following Sunday’s title-clinching win at Brighton.

The song makes reference to Liverpool fans “crying in the stands” and being “battered on the streets” at last year’s Champions League final in Kiev, which Liverpool lost 3-1 to Real Madrid.

The song, which also contains the lyric “victims of it all”, drew strong criticism after it emerged online.

But City have insisted the suggestion the chant is refereeing to Hillsborough or Reds fan Cox, who was attacked by Roma supporters last year, is ‘entirely without foundation’.

A City spokesperson said: “The song in question, which has been a regular chant during the 2018-19 season, refers to the 2018 UEFA Champions League final in Kiev.

“Any suggestion that the lyrics relate to Sean Cox or the Hillsborough tragedy is entirely without foundation.”

City’s win over Brighton ensured they retained the title by a point from second-placed Liverpool, and can complete an unprecedented domestic treble if they can win the FA Cup final against Watford on Saturday.

The Reds, though, will have another chance to win the Champions League this year when they take on Tottenham in the final in Madrid on June 1.

PORTO (REUTERS) - Liverpool face a testing Champions League semi-final against Barcelona, but have made a statement by reaching the last four for the second straight year and are equipped to deal with the very best, manager Juergen Klopp said.
Liverpool beat Porto 4-1 at the Dragao Stadium on Wednesday (April 17) to advance 6-1 on aggregate with their attacking trio of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino all on target once again.
With their defence marshalled by the hugely impressive Virgil Van Dijk, Liverpool, who reached the final last year, are now undefeated in their last 17 games in all competitions as they seek a Premier League-Champions League double.
"We have been together for a while, we needed to be more mature," Klopp said.
"The boys made their own experience in this competition, especially last year. It's the second time in a row we are in the semis.
"That says something, it's a big statement for the club. OK we play Barca, maybe it's not too easy," the German added with a smile.
Liverpool certainly made it look easy in the second half against Porto after a tough opening 25 minutes.

 
Yet after Sadio Mane latched onto a Mohamed Salah ball to open the scoring following a VAR review, Liverpool were in charge and never lost their composure.
"I was thinking it's offside, to be honest. And I told the boys 'keep going, keep going' and they say 'no, you have to wait because it's a goal'," the Senegalese said.
"I was surprised. It was an important goal but the main point today was to qualify for the semis."
Klopp said they were expecting the early Porto onslaught.
"It was very, very difficult. We knew that before, that it will be a proper whirlwind here and that's what they did," Klopp said.
"We know these games in the Champions league, they (Porto) are a completely different animal in home games. And it was clear that we had to be ready for that," he added.
"In a deep defending situation we were ready for that, we couldn't put proper pressure on them in their build-up. A little bit disorganisation, but it's all good.
"A difficult game but we won it and so I am completely fine. Going to the semi-finals, I think we are the only ones who were last in the semi-finals and again in the semi-final so that's really special for us."

Fraser, 25, is contracted to Bournemouth until 2020, but a host of clubs are interested in signing the former Aberdeen man – with his versatility a huge pull.

With Denis Suarez failing to make an impact at the Emirates following his January loan move from Barcelona, Gunners boss Unai Emery is drawing up a list of alternatives to improve his side’s creativity and dimension from the flanks.

The interest in Fraser comes with Suarez, who also played for Emery during a loan spell at Sevilla in the 2014/15 season, having only made four substitute appearances since arriving in north London.

There is an option to make the deal permanent, but that seems very unlikely to be triggered at this stage.

The Gunners secured a 10th straight home win – the first time they have achieved such a feat within a single season in 21 years – against Newcastle on Monday night, moving them two points clear of arch rivals Tottenham in third place.

Emery’s side visit Goodison Park on Sunday to take on Everton hoping to tighten their grip on a potential top four finish.

The Manchester club are accused of ‘several alleged violations’ of Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations when Uefa announced its investigation in March.

According to emails published by German magazine Der Spiegel, City allegedly hid at least £70million in funding from its owners by claiming it was sponsorship income.

The club are believed to have been accused by Uefa of providing ‘unconvincing’ explanations over their finances.

City have continued to refute the claims and released a statement questioning the integrity of the Uefa probe after a New York Times report claimed they will be suspended for a year.

“In doing so the club is reliant on both the CFCB IC’s independence and commitment to due process; and on Uefa’s commitment of the 7th of March that it ‘…will make no further comment on the matter while the investigation is ongoing’.

“The New York Times report citing ‘people familiar with the case’ is therefore extremely concerning.

His recent mistakes, against Lionel Messi in the Champions League and Leroy Sane in the Manchester derby, have led to calls from some quarters for De Gea to be dropped from the starting line-up, with Argentine Sergio Romero waiting for his chance on the United bench.

But Parlour insists the Spaniard is still a world class keeper and he’s urged Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to stick with his number one.

“David de Gea has been magnificent over the last few seasons,” said the Arsenal legend on Monday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

“There has been many, many occasions where he has saved Manchester United.

“Go back to the Spurs game at Wembley – what a performance. He kept United in that game and obviously they won in the end, and it was because of De Gea.

“But recently in the last few games he has made some really bad mistakes.

“Everyone makes mistakes in games, forwards miss penalties or open goals, but when a goalkeeper makes a mistake quite often it’s a goal.

“I don’t think they should rest him. He’s massive for Manchester United and they’ve got to keep him.”

Parlour has also told United to resolve the uncertainly surrounding De Gea’s long-term future at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have triggered an extension to his contract which means his deal now runs until 2020.

But the ex-Gunner says the club should try to convince the Spaniard to pen a new deal.

He added: “I know Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is going to look at his squad in the summer and they need to bring more players in and need to get rid of quite a few players too, but surely David de Gea won’t be one of them.

“He’s still one of the best goalkeepers in the world and they should try to get him to sign a new contract.”

BARCELONA (REUTERS) - Lionel Messi put Barcelona on the verge of the Champions League final with a devastating double in a 3-0 home win over Liverpool in the first leg of their last-four clash on Wednesday (May 1), taking his goal tally for the Catalans to 600.
The Argentine's milestone goal was a moment of brilliance as he curled a dazzling free kick into the top corner from distance to add gloss to a scoreline that did not reflect the balance of play.
Yet whereas Barcelona took their chances with clinical precision, Liverpool wasted a string of opportunities that fell their way.
Former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez reminded the visitors of his superb finishing by opening the scoring in the 26th minute of a tense and finely-balanced first half at the Nou Camp, darting between two Liverpool defenders to divert Jordi Alba's cross into the net.
Barca captain Messi scored the all-important second goal of the night in the 75th minute, chesting the ball down on the rebound and dribbling it over the line after Suarez had hammered the crossbar with a shot with his knee.
The Argentine then added to Barca's already huge advantage to take into next Tuesday's second leg at Anfield by smashing home his sizzling free kick in the 82nd minute.
"Four goals would have been better than three but this is a very good result," Messi told reporters.
"We know that the tie isn't over, Anfield is a very difficult place to go but we're happy with the super game we played tonight. They clearly wanted to score because an away goal means a lot but they didn't and we have a great advantage."

LITTLE MERCY

Liverpool, who were beaten 3-1 in last year's final by Real Madrid, played far better than the scoreline suggested, carving out a number of clear chances but spurning them all.
Barca's South American duo of Suarez and Messi showed little mercy whenever they sniffed out a chance and condemned Juergen Klopp's side to their first defeat in any competition since January with some ruthless finishing.
Klopp praised his side's performance but he was not optimistic about the likelihood of a miraculous turnaround.
"I was completely happy with how we played, we played between the lines, we had chances and caused them a lot of problems," the German told a news conference.
"If you lose away it's not a massive problem as long as you scored a goal but we didn't score that goal and that makes things a lot harder. We have a chance because it's football but we had a much bigger chance before tonight."
Suarez spared little thought for his former employers following his eventful three-and-a-half-year stay on Merseyside, as he celebrated his opening strike with relish, racing behind the goal and wagging his finger at the delighted Barca fans.

GLORIOUS CHANCE

Sadio Mane squandered a glorious chance to level for the Premier League side later in the first half but scooped the ball over the bar, while James Milner and Mohamed Salah were both denied by Barca's excellent Marc-Andre ter Stegen later on.
Klopp's side had done an impressive job of shackling Barca's all-time top scorer Messi, but there was little they could do when the Argentine pounced on the loose ball after Suarez had hit the crossbar.
Messi sparked further celebrations at a packed Nou Camp with another outstanding free kick, yet the drama in this blockbuster European encounter was far from over.
Liverpool again went agonisingly close to snatching an away goal as Barca's Ivan Rakitic scrambled the ball off the goalline only to find the feet of Salah, who somehow smashed the rebound against the near post.
Barca could have seized an even bigger advantage in the tie with two golden chances as Liverpool tired that fell to substitute Ousmane Dembele, but the Frenchman missed the target the first time then shot straight into the hands of goalkeeper Alisson Becker.
