Manchester United news: Which players should be sold and who should stay this summer? Paul Pogba, David de Gea and others assessed

It’s safe to say the Manchester United squad is in major need of a clear out in the summer.

Too many of the current line-up look disinterested and that was especially evident on the weekend as they were pummelled 4-0 by Everton.

Man United stars looked pretty clueless against Everton on Sunday

8

Man United stars looked pretty clueless against Everton on Sunday

Man United ran 8.03km less than the Toffees players during the game – and the result is the clearest indication yet that perhaps changing the players, rather than the manager, must be a priority now.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will no doubt be given funds to formulate his own squad in the summer, but he must now take a bold stance and let go of some of the deadwood.

Ander Herrera as well as Antonio Valencia look likely to depart when their contracts expire, with the former heading to PSG, so who else will follow him through the exit and who do the Red Devils need to keep in what is sure to be a busy window? talkSPORT.com has given its verdict…

David de Gea

Verdict: Keep

Although he isn’t having his best season between the sticks, De Gea is an integral part of the United team and he is one of the only genuinely world class talents in their line-up.

Old Trafford chiefs need to sort out his contract situation as quickly as possible, though, as the longer it is uncertain the more unrest there will be around the club.

Ashley Young

Verdict: Sell

Young has simply been at the club too long and United must part ways with him in the summer.

He has been a great servant to the club since his move from Aston Villa in 2011, but he doesn’t possess the quality needed to get the Red Devils back amongst Europe’s elite.

Young has been a loyal servant to United but he must be let go in the summer

8

Young has been a loyal servant to United but he must be let go in the summer

Victor Lindelof

Verdict: Keep

Although his form has dipped of late, Lindelof must stay at United as he has unquestionable talent, which was evident during the ‘new manager bounce’ when Solskjaer was appointed.

His form will become more consistent once he gets better defenders alongside him, but he should certainly remain with the club in the summer.

Chris Smalling

Verdict: Sell

Smalling, like Young, is another player who has been at the club too long.

The 29-year-old has been a good player for the Red Devils at best, but a new centre-back must be acquired as no good sides can compete for countless trophies with average players at the heart of the back line.

Phil Jones

Verdict: Sell

Jones is not good enough to play for United and must be allowed to leave the club.

He is a great professional who gives his all for the team, but he has not solved United’s defensive defensive problems and must be sold.

Diogo Dalot

Verdict: Keep

Dalot is one player United fans can genuinely be excited about.

He is by no means the finished article, but he has shown glimpses of great quality this season and could become a mainstay on the right flank for years to come.

Another right-back with experience, perhaps Aaron Wan-Bissaka or Kieran Trippier, should be signed to provide competition for the teenager.

Dalot has a bright future with the Red Devils

8

Dalot has a bright future with the Red Devils

Luke Shaw

Verdict: Keep

At one point it looked impossible for him to remain at the club and even admitted as much himself. He would have been a free agent in the summer, but signed a new contract in October, keeping him there until 2023.

Romelu Lukaku even backed him to win the club’s Player of the Year.

Nemanja Matic

Verdict: Sell

The Serb is past his prime and his form is on a downward spiral, which was clear for all to see during the Everton defeat.

He must be replaced in the summer with a younger box-to-box midfielder who can occupy a sole position in front of the defence.

Paul Pogba

Verdict: Sell

Pogba undeniably has immense talent but he is far too inconsistent and his baggage is becoming too heavy to handle.

Many thought Jose Mourinho was the problem with Pogba, but he flirted with speculation linking him to Real Madrid just days after Solskjaer was appointed – cashing in on the difficult Frenchman may be the best move for the Red Devils.

Pogba is reportedly wanted by Real Madrid

8

Pogba is reportedly wanted by Real Madrid

Fred

Verdict: Keep

As much as his first season has been a disaster, Fred could still prove to be a good acquisition in the midfield for Solskjaer.

He has shown glimpses of quality on the rare occasion this season but he must be given another season to prove his worth to the club.

Marcus Rashford

Verdict: Keep

Rashford is integral to United’s future and must be kept at all costs this summer.

This season has been his most prolific at Old Trafford, having scored ten goals and, at just 21 years old, he will only get better. The team should be built around the England star.

Rashford is integral to United’s future

8

Rashford is integral to United’s future

Romelu Lukaku

Verdict: Sell

The £75million signing from Everton has scored 28 goals in 64 league appearances for United but he simply doesn’t possess enough quality to lead the line for Solskjaer’s side.

Another proven goal scorer with experience at the top level must be signed in the summer.

Anthony Martial

Verdict: Keep

Has been another inconsistent member of the United squad this season but he must be kept on as he has bags of talent.

Another winger needs to be signed to provide Martial with more competition on the wing.

Juan Mata

Verdict: Sell

Mata has never found the form he once had at Chelsea since moving to Old Trafford, but he has still been a good player for the club.

His contract is up at the end of the season and he is seemingly heading back to Spain if reports are correct.

Mata has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford

8

Mata has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford

Alexis Sanchez

Verdict: Sell

Sanchez was once one of the finest players in the Premier League and his move to United has been nothing short of a disaster.

He has lost his confidence in front of goal and it looks irredeemable at United and he must be sold in the summer.

Jesse Lingard

Verdict: Keep

Lingard is also very inconsistent but when he plays well he is very good member of the United side.

Once he finds consistency he can cement a place in the team, but at the moment he should be kept on as a useful squad member but not a starter.

Sergio Romero

Verdict: Keep

Romero is perhaps the best no.2 in the league and always puts in a good shift when called upon.

The Argentina international must stay on in the the summer unless he wants to leave to get more first team action.

20. Sergio Romero (Goalkeeper)

8

Romero is a quality no.2

Scott McTominay

Verdict: Keep

McTominay has been a shining light in United’s barren run of form of late and he must be kept on at Old Trafford.

The Scot put in a superb display against Barcelona in the first leg of the Champions League tie and if he continues to play well, he could become an important player in the next few seasons.

Andreas Pereira

Verdict: Loan

This season has seen Pereira’s game time improve, with the Brazilian featuring in 13 matches, but a loan move could be best for him.

He has the quality to succeed at Old Trafford but some more first team experience may be best for the 23-year-old as at the moment he isn’t good enough to start.

Pereira should seek a loan move away from United

8

Pereira should seek a loan move away from United

Marcos Rojo

Verdict: Sell

It’s been another bad season for the Argentine, who has been hampered significantly by injury and has made just four league appearances.

He is now in his fifth season at Old Traford and should be let go in an instant as the move hasn’t worked out for either party.

Eric Bailly

Verdict: Sell

Bailly’s move to United has also been disastrous and the 25-year-old should be allowed to leave in the summer.

He has played just 49 times since moving to the club in 2016 and he is also very injury-prone.

Mateo Darmian

Verdict: Sell

Darmian has struggled to adapt to life at Old Trafford since arriving from Torino in 2015 and should be allowed to leave in the summer.

With Dalot now becoming a first-team regular and United looking to recruit another right-back, the future doesn’t look great for the Italian.

Saido Berahino found guilty of drink driving after telling police he had been robbed

Stoke City footballer Saido Berahino was suspended by the club when he was caught drink-driving as he tried to escape from robbers armed with a gun and a knife, a court has heard.

The 25-year-old was found to be almost three times the drink-drive limit after his black Range Rover was stopped in London’s West End in the early hours of February 18.

Saido Berahino has been found guilty of drink-driving

The Burundi-born striker, who started his career with West Bromwich Albion, told Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court he had driven his car for less than 30 seconds after drinking two mojitos.

But he claimed he only did so because he feared robbers – who had stolen his watch, two diamond chains and a bracelet minutes earlier – would return.

“I was scared. I had just been attacked and obviously my niece was there and I had to take action.

“I had to drive off from the scene,” he said.

“They had a knife and a gun as well.”

Berahino said he did not immediately tell police about the robbery after they were called at around 3am to reports of a possible stabbing involving seven people outside VQ Cafe, in Great Russell Street.

“In the past I have been in the media and I didn’t want anything to get out in the media,” he said.

“It would jeopardise my career and I was scared of that,” he said. “It’s had a massive impact on my career. The club has taken a stance on it.

I was suspended from first team action to play for the team. That was the last thing I wanted.”

Berahino said he had driven from Birmingham to London with his girlfriend, niece and her boyfriend to eat at the Sumosan Twiga restaurant in Knightsbridge.

He said he had a game the following day and admitted it was a breach of the rules of his club, which forbids players from going on nights out for 48 hours before playing.

Berahino told magistrates ‘I had a couple’ of drinks before his girlfriend drove to the VQ Cafe.

He said her ex-boyfriend was ‘very aggressive’ when he arrived, claiming she owed him £10,000 – then returned later having removed his jewellery and changed his clothes.

Berahino, wearing a black suit, white T-shirt and black shoes with no socks, told the court he was approached by four men, who he did not know, two of whom flashed weapons.

“I can see a knife on one male and the other had a gun – I could see the handle,” he said.

The police officer described Berahino as ‘nervous’

“I was scared, shocked. I just wanted to get away from there. I tried to get back in the car but one of them grabbed the door so me and him are fighting back-and-forth, back-and-forth.

“I was afraid for my life and my girlfriend and niece was there. I took a decision to run off because I was scared.”

Berahino said he tripped to the floor and CCTV footage played in court showed him being attacked by two men.

“I tried to cover my face and just telling them take everything, take everything, take everything,” he said.

“I was scared just wondering where my friends are, where my niece is. I panicked, everything happened so fast.”

Berahino said he got back to the car where the rest of his companions were ‘panicked’ and drove for less than 30 seconds to Bedford Square, where he was followed by police.

“At the time I was scared. I didn’t know what to do,” he said.

Pc Stephen Luu said “his eyes appeared red and he appeared really nervous,” adding: “As I got closer to him, I could actually smell alcohol on his breath.

“I did ask him if he had been drinking, and he replied, ‘yes, just one’.”

Pc Luu said Berahino looked ‘confused’ when he asked him about blood on his hand and realised his T-shirt was ripped when he told him to get out of the vehicle.

Pc Oliver Clixby said the footballer’s ‘eyes were bloodshot’, and his speech ‘was rather slurred.’

The court heard he was asked to breathe into a breathalyser, which showed he had 112mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath.

Pc Clixby said that when he was arrested, Berahino replied: “This is bullshit.”

At the police station, Berahino was found to be almost three times the drink-drive limit, with 103mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath, the court heard.

The legal limit is 35mg.

Berahino, of Old Penkridge Road, Staffordshire, denies one count of drink-driving.

He joined Stoke for an initial £12 million in January 2017 from West Brom, where he served a suspension shortly before the move.

Berahino played at youth level for England but switched to the Burundi international side, making his debut last year.

Football: Messi penalty helps under-par Barca beat Real Valladolid

BARCELONA (REUTERS) - Lionel Messi scored one penalty and missed another as Barcelona beat Real Valladolid 1-0 on Saturday (Feb 16) to open up a seven-point lead at the top of La Liga.
The Catalans played far below their vibrant best but were not troubled by the visitors at the Nou Camp as they ended a run of three consecutive draws in all competitions.
Ousmane Dembele was handed his first start after injury, and loan signing Kevin-Prince Boateng featured for only the second time since joining in January as Ernesto Valverde rested Luis Suarez ahead of Tuesday's Champions League clash at Olympique Lyonnais.
Barcelona struggled to create chances against a tight Valladolid defence, only breaking the deadlock when Messi converted a penalty won by Gerard Pique just before halftime for his 22nd league goal of the season.
Messi almost scored his second early in the second half but former Barcelona goalkeeper Jordi Masip pulled off a breathtaking stop to deny La Liga's top scorer from close range.
The Argentine had another chance from the penalty spot in the final stages after substitute Philippe Coutinho was fouled but Masip made another impressive save to deny him.

“Kel will come back into pre-season, gain more confidence and hopefully come out of that with a renewed motivation to show his qualities.”

Iheanacho has scored just ten goals since joining Leicester in a £25million deal from Manchester City in 2017.

And he missed a gilt-edged chance against his former employers to draw the Foxes level on Monday.

Rodgers added: “I’ve been impressed with him. His appetite, his work, and then in games where he has come on, he’s impacted the game.

“He’s done very well, and nearly did again,” said Rodgers.

“He knows he should score, in big games you don’t get many chances. He’s a fantastic young player and hopefully he can show that over his time at Leicester.”

Fabian Schar: Brain injury charity Headway calls for UEFA to launch investigation over Newcastle United defender̢۪s concussion

Brain injury charity Headway has demanded a UEFA investigation after Fabian Schar played the full 90 minutes of Switzerland’s 2-0 win over Georgia, despite being â€Å“knocked out for a few seconds” in the first half.

The Newcastle defender was involved in a sickening clash of heads with Georgia̢۪s Jemal Tabidze in the 24th minute as Switzerland got their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign off to a winning start on Saturday.

There was a five-minute stoppage while Schar received treatment from medical staff before completing the rest of the game.

The 27-year-old told Swiss outlet Blick that he was â€Å“knocked out for a few seconds” and could not remember the incident. He lay on the ground motionless as players checked to see if he had swallowed his tongue.

Schar will not play a part in Tuesday̢۪s Group D game with Denmark and is suspended for Newcastle̢۪s trip to Arsenal next week.

But in a statement on Monday, Headway expressed its â€Å“anger and disbelief” over the incident.

The statement added: “The charity has demanded UEFA launches an investigation into the circumstances that resulted in Swiss player Fabian Schar being cleared to continue playing in a match against Georgia – just minutes after being knocked unconscious and needing emergency help from a member of the opposition.”

Headway chief executive Peter McCabe said: “What is it going to take to make football take concussion seriously?

“How many more players will have their careers and, more importantly, their lives and long-term health put at risk by the sport’s inability to follow its own protocols?

“Put simply, the decision to allow Fabian Schar to return to the field of play after suffering a clear concussion was not only incredibly dangerous but also a clear dereliction of duty.

“The player’s comments after the match are also deeply disturbing and again show the lack of awareness and understanding among players.

“UEFA must immediately launch an investigation into the incident and explain why their protocols were not followed.”

On Sunday, the Swiss Football Association said: â€Å“International Fabian Schar is in good shape on the day after the game of the A national team in Georgia and the clash in a header duel with Jemal Tabidze.

â€Å“When the medical team of the Swiss A national team arrived immediately after the clash, (Dr Damian) Meli said he (Schar) was ‘awake and oriented’.

“He was examined according to the ‘Sport Concussion Assessment Tool’ – no neuropsychological deficits could be detected.

“Therefore, after about five minutes of treatment, the medical team decided to let Schar continue playing. The centre-back could then continue the game without significant problems and play through to the end.

“Since later, more detailed tests after the game concluded no abnormal results, Fabian Schar was able to return to travel with the team back to Switzerland.”
