Matthijs de Ligt: Man United and Liverpool transfer target tells talkSPORT he ‘hasn’t made up his mind’ about future yet

Netherlands defender Matthijs de Ligt has told talkSPORT he is yet to make up his mind about his future, amid links with Manchester United and Liverpool.

The 19-year-old is one of the most in-demand players ahead of the summer transfer window, having been linked with big-money moves to England, Spain and France.

The race for his signature has come after an impressive season for Ajax, captaining the club to the Eredivisie title and to the Champions League semi-finals, where they were knocked out by Tottenham.

United and Liverpool are thought to have a strong interest in the youngster, although recent reports have claimed Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain are more likely destinations.

However, when quizzed after England’s Nations League semi-final defeat to the Dutch on Thursday, De Ligt appeared to be keeping his options open and insisted he hasn’t made a decision about where he will play next season.

“Obviously the Premier League is a great competition, but I haven’t made up my mind yet,” he told talkSPORT in Portugal.

“I’m still looking at what to do.

Shane Long, who once went 1,320 minutes without a Premier League goal, has netted more times than Manchester United’s entire squad in April.

The rejuvenated Southampton striker scored his fourth goal of the month by opening the scoring in the 3-3 draw with Bournemouth on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils have only found the net three times this month.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s honeymoon has well and truly ended in the last few weeks, with the club slipping out of the top four following a run of three defeats in their last four league matches.

United were also recently knocked out of the FA Cup by Wolves and eliminated from the Champions League at the hands of Barcelona.

What’s more, Long has played a game less than United, who have failed to score in four out of their six games this month.

After setting the record for the Premier League’s fastest ever goal on Tuesday night, the Irishman supplied a neat finish at St Mary’s during the six goal thriller for his fourth goal in five games.

‘I’m black and I’m proud’ – Manchester City man Raheem Sterling claims walking off the pitch would let the racists win

Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling declared ‘I’m black and I’m proud’ after rejecting calls for players who receive racial abuse to walk off the pitch during a game.

Sterling, 24, was speaking after football in England and Scotland was marred by shameful events last weekend, days after Tottenham defender Danny Rose said he couldn’t wait to retire from football due to the way the authorities have failed to tackle the problem.

There have been calls for players to walk off the pitch if they are abused but Sterling said he felt that would be the wrong move.

“I wouldn’t personally agree with it,” he said. “To win the game would hurt them even more, they’re only trying to get you down.

“If you walk off they win, to score or win would be better.”

Sterling, who has consistently raised the issue after receiving personal abuse, does not understand what drives people to be racially abusive.

“It’s offensive but my mum always told me I’m a wonderful black child and I know this,” he said.

Sterling was also allegedly racially abused during City’s Premier League match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge earlier this season

“I’m black and I’m proud, and I’m confident in my body. Some people can’t take it but my mum always told me to love myself and who I am.”

Sterling was speaking ahead of City’s Champions League clash with Tottenham, whose left-back Rose said last week he “can’t wait to see the back of the game” because of inaction on the problem.

Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino said the issue of racism must be tackled at every level of society.

“I think it’s a very delicate situation. It’s not easy,” he said.

“It’s a very personal situation, how you feel, your emotion and how you can manage your emotion.

Lancashire Police on Monday said a 20-year-old man from Sheffield had been arrested after handing himself in at Blackpool Police Station following an abusive message sent to Wigan player Nathan Byrne on Twitter on Saturday.

“The man has since been released under investigation pending a charging decision by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS),” a police statement said.

There was also an arrest after Derby’s 3-3 draw at Brentford where Rams midfielder Duane Holmes was the victim of alleged abuse.

Derby player Holmes was racially abused last weekend

Derby player Holmes was racially abused last weekend

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Derby manager Frank Lampard said: “(Duane’s) OK. He was upset at the time, which is understandable but now he’s OK. It’s up to the authorities to deal with it now.

“This is not just a problem for football. It’s everywhere.”

Northampton said several members of their first-team squad were also allegedly abused prior to their match at Notts County.

The Professional Footballers’ Association branded the incidents over the weekend “another stark reminder of how crucial anti-racism and equality development work is across football and society”.

It said in a statement: “Racism is a societal issue but football has the opportunity to demonstrate to society that it is unacceptable.

“Everyone needs to come together to ensure swift and robust action to tackle racism, and we commend the Championship clubs involved in this weekend’s incidents for their decisive action and statements.”

The PFA added it would continue to lobby the Football Association, UEFA and FIFA for stronger sanctions.

In Scotland on Monday, a 38-year-old man was charged with using racist language at the Edinburgh derby.

Police Scotland are also investigating after footage was posted on Twitter which purported to show racist abuse directed at Hibernian midfielder Marvin Bartley during his side’s 2-1 win over Hearts.

A police spokeswoman said: “Police in Edinburgh are investigating following a report of a hate crime at Tynecastle Stadium.

“The incident happened on Saturday, April 6, and was reported to police on Monday, April 8.”

Hearts said in a statement: “The club abhors racism of any kind and will take appropriate action against any individual found guilty of racist behaviour within Tynecastle.”

The Scottish Professional Football League said racism was “completely unacceptable” and it supported any steps taken by its clubs to identify the perpetrators.

A spokesperson added: “Once identified, it’s vital that, as well as prompting club bans, such behaviour is dealt with severely by the courts.

“The SPFL wholeheartedly condemns all racism and, whilst rare in Scottish football, it’s something we and our clubs take very seriously.

“We would strongly encourage supporters who witness any kind of discriminatory abuse to report it to the police.”

Football: Morata injury could make Sarri enter January sales

Football: Morata injury could make Sarri enter January sales

LONDON (AFP) - Chelsea coach Maurizio Sarri is likely to assess the attacking talent on offer in the January transfer window after Alvaro Morata suffered an injury this week.
The Spanish striker was forced out of the Europa League draw at Hungarian club Vidi just before half-time after injuring his knee while shooting and will almost certainly miss Chelsea's Premier League trip to Brighton on Sunday (Dec 16).
His misfortune allowed Olivier Giroud to enter the action and the France international responded with a superb late free-kick that secured a 2-2 draw and ensured Chelsea remained unbeaten throughout the group stage as they progressed to the last 32.
Sarri must now decide whether Giroud should start at the Amex Stadium or whether he again employs Eden Hazard in a central role as part of a less physical, more mobile forward line.
Given his frequent tactical changes so far, the Italian does not appear fully convinced that either approach is ideal.
Neither Morata nor Giroud have fully impressed this season. Morata has outscored his rival for the centre-forward role with five Premier League goals to Giroud's one but has again proved inconsistent, mirroring last season's form when he was bought as a replacement for Diego Costa.

BIDING HIS TIME

Giroud told the Guardian this week he had no problem with biding his time at Chelsea because the prospect of winning a Premier League title kept him motivated.
"Alvaro (had) a great pre-season, so it was normal not to take him off the team even to put in a world champion. Let's be patient, work in training and come back stronger," he told the paper.
"I prefer to be at a big club rather than playing every week in a less prestigious team and I still have targets.
"To win a Premier League is my last dream as a footballer, maybe more than winning a Champions League, because I know how tough it is to win this league.
"I have team mates here who have won it, so I'm a bit jealous."
Former Real Madrid striker Alvaro made a promising start to his Chelsea career, scoring freely and demonstrating his strength in the air.
Recurring injuries and difficulty adapting to the physical demands of the Premier League have taken their toll, however, and Morata has rarely looked entirely comfortable since.
The man bought for £60 million (S$100 million) has never achieved the popularity at Stamford Bridge enjoyed by the abrasive Costa, whose willingness to confront defenders made him a supporters' favourite before his relationship with Sarri's predecessor Antonio Conte turned sour.
Reports this week that Barcelona could make Morata a target in January suggest he could leave sooner rather than later.
However, Sarri could not allow Morata to go without lining up a replacement - furthermore, Morata's injury this week has highlighted the risk of relying on just two principal strikers.
Giroud has given good service since he arrived from Arsenal last January but his return of four goals from 26 league appearances, 15 of those as a substitute, is not prolific.
His role for Chelsea mirrors that for France - he has an ability to bring team-mates into play in and around the opposition penalty area. To this effect, he has proved an encouraging presence for Hazard who has made it clear he prefers to operate coming in from wide areas.
Hazard's relationship with Conte suffered when the Italian used him in a more central role and having been again asked to switch, the goals have dried up for the Belgian.
He scored eight goals in the opening ten games but has now failed to find the net in eight games.
Chelsea's hopes of winning the title rest on Sarri getting the Belgian scoring again and finding a more consistent central striker - and the solution to both problems is likely to be found in the January transfer market.

Man United and Tottenham travel to Singapore for matches against Serie A sides Internazionale and Juventus respectively, before facing off themselves in Shanghai, China.

Tottenham and United have both previously visited Singapore, with the north Londoners returning to the country after a 24-year absence. The Red Devils last played there in 2001, when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – who is expected to be named the club’s permanent manager before the start of next season – netted a brace in an 8-1 defeat of Team Singapore.

Spurs later take on Inter at the Lilywhites’ new stadium, which will officially open next week.

Elsewhere, Arsenal will be heading west to play Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Roma throughout a pre-season stay in the United States

Milan, Atletico Madrid, Benfica and Chivas Guadalajara complete the full list of clubs involved, with the latter becoming the first non-European participant of the International Champions Cup.
